March Update — March 5, 2018

Dear Campus Community,

The President Search Committee has completed interviews with nine semi-finalist candidates. The search committee was exceptionally pleased with the caliber of the candidates, all of whom possess a variety of strengths, perspectives, and experience that would advance the University. Ultimately, the committee had to narrow the pool, and after careful deliberation identified a select number of candidates to advance in the search process. 

During the next stage of the search process, the search consultant team will conduct extensive background and reference checks on each finalist candidate. After the background and reference checks are complete, the candidates will be invited to engage with the campus community and participate in interviews with the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees. We anticipate that the campus visits will take place the week of March 19th. The campus community will have the opportunity to provide their feedback prior to the Executive Committee forwarding a finalist candidate to the full Board of Trustees for confirmation this April. 

The work of the President Search Committee is for the most part now complete. I would like to thank the search committee members for their exceptional work in carefully examining each candidate in consideration of the qualities and priorities that were identified with input from the campus community. The search committee dedicated several hours of personal time and applied their individual expertise and talents to ensure we identified the very best candidates to forward to the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees for consideration. 

Look for more updates in the coming weeks regarding the finalist candidates. As soon as the finalist candidates successfully complete the background and reference check phase of the search process, their information will be shared publicly, and agenda information for their campus visits will be shared with the campus community. I appreciate the patience, support, and engagement of the campus community as this important process moves toward closure culminating in the appointment of the next President.

Winter Update — February 1, 2018

The president search committee is on track with the timeline for the search process that was shared with the campus community last fall. After the search was advertised, the search consultant and search committee members immediately began receiving nominations and recommendations of prospective applicants for the position. Additionally, for several weeks the search consultants actively recruited candidates whose experience and qualifications aligned with the position requirements which were informed by the campus community.

Shortly after the winter break, search committee members began reviewing a robust applicant pool of over forty qualified applicants. The committee met in mid-January to narrow the applicant pool by selecting semifinalist candidates. The committee will conduct in-person interviews with these individuals within the next few weeks with the goal of identifying candidates to move forward in the search process. Thorough reference and background checks will be conducted during the finalist stage of the search process later this spring. The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees will ultimately recommend one individual to the full board for a vote of confirmation in April 2018. 

Confidentiality is very critical as most of the candidates are currently employed in key leadership positions at other higher education institutions and organizations. It is typical for the names of applicants and candidates progressing through the search process to remain confidential at this stage in the search process. Information about a finalist candidate(s) will be shared at a time deemed appropriate by the search committee.

Stakeholder Focus Group Results - October 25, 2017

Dear Campus Community,

Thank you to all who were able to participate in the stakeholder focus groups facilitated by our executive search consultant, Jan Asnicar. The turnout for the focus groups was impressive and demonstrates the commitment of our campus community to the success of Oklahoma City University. Additionally, we received over ninety responses to the survey. On behalf of the search committee, thank you for taking time to provide your invaluable feedback, which is a critical component of the search process. 

The information gathered from the focus groups and survey will be used to inform the development of the position profile and identify the primary initiatives for the next president. The President Search Committee met last Friday and received a preliminary overview of the information that was gathered from the focus group process. An aggregate report reflecting focus group and survey findings will be shared with campus in the near future.  

Currently, the search committee is working with Ms. Asnicar to develop the position profile and other materials that will be used to market this opportunity to potential candidates and the broader community. While passive recruitment has already begun, we anticipate the official launch of the active recruitment phase of the search process to begin early next month. A website dedicated to the president search is currently in development and will contain pertinent information related to the search, as well as details about the position and instructions on the application and nomination process. Concurrent with the launch of the active recruitment phase in early November, our executive search consultant and her team will begin to engage in candidate sourcing for approximately four to six weeks. As a reminder, the OCU law dean search process will follow the president search process. At this point, we anticipate the lag time for the law dean search process to be approximately four weeks.

The committee expects to begin reviewing applicant materials no later than the beginning of January 2018 and complete preliminary interviews by early February. The search process is on track for the Board of Trustees to appoint a new president by July 1, 2018. Look for more updates on the president search as we continue to advance in the process.

President Search and Law Dean Search Update - September 29, 2017

On behalf of the search committees for the President search and the Law Dean search, I am providing the following update:

The Oklahoma City University president search committee has been working over the past several weeks to select an executive search firm to provide support for the search process. After reviewing several proposals, the committee is pleased to announce that the university has secured the services of Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates to support the president search. 

Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates, an executive search firm for higher education and non-profit organizations, will bring their expertise to OCU. Jan Asnicar, a partner in the firm, will be the primary consultant working with the search committee. Ms. Asnicar will visit campus in mid-October to facilitate meetings with university stakeholders. These meetings will offer the campus community an opportunity to provide feedback and to learn more about the search process. Meeting dates and times will be announced in the near future.

Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates has conducted more than 2,200 executive-level searches for higher education clients. They have a reputation in the industry for their excellent placement retention rate; over 95% of individuals hired in searches involving the firm have remained in their positions for at least four years. Additionally, the firm also has success in developing diverse pools of candidates for consideration by their clients with over 55% of their placements being women or underrepresented minorities. 

The search committee chairs will share more information with the campus community, including an expected timeline for each of the searches, as the search process develops. Please direct all inquiries about the searches to the appropriate search chair.

Search Committee Members Named - August 16, 2017

The search committees for the positions of president and law school dean have been named and each will meet within the next week. 

The law dean search committee will meet August 17 and the presidential search committee will meet August 22. Successful candidates from each search are expected to begin their respective roles at Oklahoma City University on July 1, 2018.

The presidential search committee will be led by Board Chairman Ron Norick. Dance Professor Kelli Rhodes-Stevens will serve as vice chair. Committee members include:

Norick appointed the committee’s trustee, cabinet and dean’s positions while the Faculty Senate Executive Committee appointed the full-time faculty members.

To conclude the search, the committee will provide a list of two to four candidates to the executive committee of the Board of Trustees. The new president will be selected by a recommendation from the executive committee and a formal vote by the Board of Trustees.
