Red Earth MFA

Write in the middle of it all

Write and study wherever you are

The Red Earth Online Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing at Oklahoma City University offers you the opportunity to study creative writing without sacrificing your life. At the same time, our innovative approach to online learning provides the dynamic curriculum and enriching community you expect from an MFA program.

Our program connects you with experienced creative and professional writers who will nurture your creative talent. The Red Earth MFA combines online intensives, craft study with our accomplished faculty-mentors, regular critique workshops run by 3rd semester students, and various Electives — Topics in Writing Professions and Topics in Creative Writing — each semester. Study in the Red Earth MFA program culminates with a full-length, publishable thesis.

New as of this 2023-2024 academic year, the Red Earth invites aspiring dramatic writers, including playwrights and screenwriters, to study in the program and collaborate with OKCU theater and screen acting programs.

We take immense pride in our students, who are warm, welcoming, and supportive — a true community.

Tailored coursework

The Red Earth MFA is an online Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing graduate studies program. Students will complete 12 hours of course work each fall and spring semester for two years, for a total of 48 hours that, along with the thesis, lead to the MFA in Creative Writing, a terminal degree in the field.

The online model is suitable for both traditional and nontraditional students: you can keep your job and keep up with your family responsibilities while studying for your MFA.
