The OKCU Mathematics and
Physics departments are committed to provide students with mathematical
and scientific knowledge and skills needed for their future careers, to
stimulate intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and analytical and
problem-solving skills. In fulfillment of this mission, the Mathematics
and Physics departments educate the general OKCU student population to
become mathematically and scientifically literate citizens, provide
strong and effective curriculums to undergraduate mathematics and
physics majors in order to prepare them for graduate school, and provide
helpful advice to students in their career choice as mathematicians,
physicists, and engineers.

The OKCU Mathematics and Physics departments strive to maintain the highest standards of teaching and to offer programs of choice in the region that have a reputation for the graduates' success.

## Study Mathematics

In our modern, fast changing and highly demanding world, one undergraduate college degree is often not sufficient to succeed in the professional world after graduation.

- “Even if you do
not choose a career in the mathematical sciences, studying as much
mathematics as you can is a good way to keep your career options open.
Mathematics is an excellent foundation for, and is usually a
prerequisite to, study in all areas of science and engineering. Students
in such areas as anthropology, sociology, and psychology, as well as
law, business, and medicine, also benefit from a solid background in
mathematics and statistics. It will help you to better understand
science and technology and their effects on our world.”
(Quote from
*Careers in Mathematics)* - Almost
all of the top fifty jobs in the "best" jobs list involved mathematical
reasoning and knowledge. This list was the result of the comparison of
two hundred fifty jobs classified according to:
- Income
- Future outlook
- Physical demands
- Job security
- Stress
- Work environment

## Study Physics

In our modern, fast changing and highly demanding world, one undergraduate college degree is often not sufficient to succeed in the professional world after graduation.

**College graduates with degrees in Physics find immediate employment.**The waiting time between graduation and the beginning of employment is, on the average, shorter than one month.**The initial salaries are highest for engineering, mathematics and physics graduates.**Salaries in these areas are between 50% and 100% higher than those for other disciplines (like English, Education, Philosophy, Sociology, History and others).**The areas of application of physics are numerous, challenging and gratifying.**

## Study at OKCU

- All courses are taught by faculty with Ph.D. degrees who have many years of teaching experience.
- Students obtain solid advice by faculty members for their future goals, whether that is graduate school, an occupation in the industry, or research areas. In recent years, about 85% of all graduates were accepted to top-ranked graduate schools. According the US News & World Report, physicists and mathematicians find immediate employment following graduation.
- Students who wish to pursue advanced degrees in the areas of theoretical, experimental, and applied physics and engineering obtain a solid background in math and physics.
- Physics majors are advised to take as many courses in mathematics to be better prepared for graduate school, in pursuing an engineering degree, and securing a permanent position in government, industry, and research institutes.
- Mathematics majors are encouraged to participate in undergraduate research projects.
- A strong personal interaction between students and faculty exists in our department, which helps students feel at ease in the college environment.
