Safety & Security
At Oklahoma City University, the safety of our students, staff, and visitors is our top priority. We have an exemplary record of campus safety based on our secure residence halls, the cooperation of our students, and a vigilant campus community.
General Campus Safety Tips
- Keep an eye out for loiterers or those hanging around your residence hall who should not be there. Contact a University Housing staff member or University Police if needed.
- If possible, always travel with another person - especially after dark.
- Only use well-lit and well-traveled streets and/or paths on campus at night. Be certain to avoid unlit or dimly lit areas.
- Make sure all doors and windows are locked as you leave your residence hall or apartment.
- Do not let anyone follow you into your residence hall. Remember - one swipe, one person.
- Stay with a group of people and avoid non-populated or poorly lit areas whenever possible.
- Have your keys ready and make sure that at least one hand is free when going to your car. Avoid having both hands overloaded.
- Tell someone you trust where you are going and when you plan to return.
- Do not loan your key to others. If your key is lost or stolen, notify a hall staff member as soon as possible.
Residence Hall Safety
Safety is a top priority in any residence hall. Several policies and types of life safety equipment designed to increase safety within the residence halls are in place. Removing, tampering, and/or damaging any life safety device will not be tolerated. These include, but are not limited to, the following:
Policies
- Residents are issued an Oklahoma City University ID card used to gain access to their residence hall. Residents should not allow non-residents to follow them through the open door when entering/leaving the building. This compromises the safety of all residents. Non-residents should contact a resident of the building to escort them while in the residence hall.
- Residence hall staff are on duty from 5:00pm - 8:00am to monitor activity in each building Monday through Friday and 24 hours a day on Saturday and Sunday.
- Residence Life staff are available 24/7 to respond to emergencies within the residence halls. Both student and full-time staff live in the residence halls to provide a quick response and ongoing support to our students.
Campus Police
- The Oklahoma City University Police Department is made up of 13 full-time officers. An escort service is provided to all students at any time, day or night — just call (405) 208-5001.
