Biography

John Schimek is Professor of Double Bass and String Education for the Wanda L. Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University. A nationally recognized double bass, strings, and orchestra clinician, Schimek has worked with junior and senior high orchestras, college and youth symphonies, All-City, All-District, Region, and All-State orchestras and is the conductor for the Oklahoma City Sinfonia, an adult community orchestra. He is regularly invited to present clinics at conventions for the American String Teachers Association, the International Society of Bassists, and has presented bass clinics, adjudicated, and performed in China, South America, and Europe. He has developed a Bass Day workshop for school bass players which has been presented in several states. His students are actively performing in orchestras in North America, Taiwan, and Europe and are also successful university and public school teachers. As a performer, he has appeared with several professional orchestras and has recorded for television and movie productions. He is in demand for his work with children and frequently performs for schools, children’s centers, and hospitals.

His published materials may be found in journals for Bass World, American String Teachers, Teaching Music, and several state music education journals. He is a contributing author in the textbook Teaching Music Through Orchestral Performance. Currently, he is President of the International Society of Bassists and was the 2019 ISB convention chair. He has served as the Oklahoma ASTA chapter president and several terms on the board for the Oklahoma Music Educators Association.

John Schimek is the recipient of several awards including the OK-ASTA Teacher of the Year, the Oklahoma City University Music and Performing Arts Outstanding Faculty Award, and has been twice recognized by the Oklahoma Legislature.
