Biography

Dr. Kent Buchanan was named provost and vice president for academic affairs effective December 15, 2016. In 2012, he was named the assistant provost until he began serving as interim provost in July 2015. 

Buchanan joined the OKCU faculty in 2006. Prior to that, he was a tenured associate professor of microbiology and immunology at the Tulane University Health Sciences Center. The disruptions at Tulane caused by Hurricane Katrina brought Buchanan back to his home state of Oklahoma where he had previously worked as an associate research scientist at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation and a research assistant professor at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. 

Buchanan received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in microbiology from the University of Oklahoma and his Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. In addition to serving as chair of FSEC and therefore a member of the board of trustees, Buchanan has chaired or been a member of most of the university’s councils and committees. 

In 2009 he was appointed to the board of the Science Museum of Oklahoma, and in 2010, he was appointed to the board of regents of the Oklahoma School of Science and Math. Buchanan serves on the Mission Council for Church of the Servant United Methodist Church.
