I'm interested in both so-called literary writing and so-called genre writing, and in particular the intersection where the two kinds of writing meet (I'm not even really sure they're two different kinds of writing, to tell you the truth). As a teacher, I try most of all to help the writer figure out where his or her story, novel, or script wants to go—and then figure out the best way to get there.

Lou Berney is the Edgar Award-winning author of The Long and Faraway Gone, Whiplash River, and Gutshot Straight.  His novels have also been nominated for the Anthony, Barry, Lefty, and Los Angeles Times Book Awards, and The Long and Faraway Gone was a USA Today best-seller. His short stories have appeared in publications such as The New Yorker, Ploughshares, and the Pushcart Prize Anthology, and he’s written screenplays for, among others, Warner Brothers, Paramount, Focus Features, ABC, and Fox.
