Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans
Special Processing Notes:
- If this is the first year you will receive a loan at OKCU, please remember that you will receive automatic e-mail reminders to complete the Master Promissory Note. The reminders will stop once your loan has been originated by the financial aid office. You may continue to receive the reminders even if you have completed the Master Promissory Note until the loan is processed. Loan processing will begin by May 1, 2019. Please be patient.
Student loans are provided by the U.S. Department of Education to enable a student to pay for education after high school. Eligible students borrow directly from the U.S. Department of Education.
There are two types of federal loans available to students: Direct Subsidized Loans and Direct Unsubsidized Loans.
The information below will highlight the key differences between the subsidized and unsubsidized loans, as well as guide you through the steps needed to obtain a Direct Loan for your OKCU education.
Subsidized vs. Unsubsidized Loans
From the U.S. Department of Education, studentaid.gov website.
- Direct Subsidized Loans are loans made to eligible undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need, by completing the FAFSA, to help cover the cost of higher education. Subsidized loan borrowers are not responsible for making interest payments while in an in-school, grace, or deferment period.
- Direct Unsubsidized Loans are loans made to eligible undergraduate, graduate, and professional students regardless of need. Unsubsidized loans accrue interest regardless of the loan status.
