Methodist scholarship helps OCU student shine

Carly Youngberg is a 2020 Oklahoma City University graduate who is now an Undergraduate Admissions Counselor. Carly has a special role as she is the Admissions United Methodist Liaison at Oklahoma City University. She is also a Court Appointed Special Advocate for Children, or CASA, volunteer. During her time as a student, Carly was a Gold Star Ambassador. Helping students find a school that can allow them to achieve their dream is Carly’s goal!

“OCU is not new to me, as I graduated with my English degree in May of 2020," Carly said. "Earning my degree certainly wouldn’t have been possible without the United Methodist Clergy Dependent scholarships. Now I am in a position to help other United Methodist students achieve their dreams like I was able to do.

"OCU has allowed me to grow both as a student, and a person. I was even able to study Celtic Christianity in Ireland and Northern Ireland with Rev. Rod Newman and Dr. Leslie Long in 2018. This trip truly changed my life! Traveling to Ireland was a spiritual awakening for me. Visiting ancient sites where believers have been worshipping for generations before me was incredibly powerful. The majesty and beauty of God’s creation in the Irish landscape, people, and wildlife were awe-inspiring. I felt instantly at home in a country I had never even been to before.

"All in all, the trip made me realize simultaneously how small I am, but also how important I am in God’s eyes. My favorite memory of the trip was singing 'Be Thou My Vision' in an ancient chapel on the remote island of Inis Mor with our group from OCU. All I could think of was how much history was in that space, and I was able to contribute to it! I think I look at the world differently now, it seems so much bigger and more complex. It is both terrifying and thrilling.

"I am so thankful for the world class education that I received at OCU. I am excited to help incoming students access the same opportunities I was so blessed to have. I look forward to helping the next generation of United Methodist students choose OCU as their university to learn and grow spiritually."
