Two opposing organizations will participate in a moderated discussion about State Question 744 at 6 p.m. Oct. 28 at Oklahoma City University. The forum will be held in the Kerr McGee Auditorium in Meinders School of Business at N.W. 27th Street and McKinley Avenue. It is free to the public.
The event at OCU will mark the second public forum in which the One Oklahoma Coalition and Yes on 744 Coalition participate. The One Oklahoma Coalition says the measure provides “no oversight or accountability, no reforms in public schools, and there is no way to pay for the increased funding.” Yes on 744 Coalition argues the measure “will help recruit and retain high quality teachers, prepares our students for good-paying jobs, and prevents further harmful cuts.”
Oklahoma State Question 744, or SQ 744, is on the Nov. 2 ballot in Oklahoma as an initiated constitutional amendment. The measure is known by its supporters as the Helping Oklahoma Public Education Act. If approved, it would amend the Oklahoma Constitution to require the state Legislature to fund public education at the regional average per-pupil expenditure. SQ 744 was initiated by the Oklahoma Education Association (OEA) after the union lost a lawsuit seeking to increase education funding.
The forum will be moderated by Richard Johnson, chairman of the OCU Political Science Department and assistant dean of the Petree College of Arts & Sciences. Questions for the forum will be formulated by OCU education students under the direction of Lois Lawler-Brown, chairwoman of the Education Department. The Center for Student Leadership is coordinating the event.
Corey Hill, coordinator for Student Development at OCU, said the university organized the event as a way to engage the campus and the public in matters of important issues.
“We seek to impact our campus community through insightful, engaging, and useful co-curricular activities in a quest for transformative learning,” Hill said. “We contribute to the holistic education of our students, create successful professionals and produce engaged citizens.”
