Academic Testing

At Oklahoma City University, our students are varied and diverse in their backgrounds. As such, academic success does not follow one particular pathway. Determining the suitable courses for incoming students is a vital first step in ensuring that they get off to the right start. Some students may be placed into courses using their student data, including but not limited to high school GPA, SAT, ACT, CLEP or AP scores while others will need to take placement assessments in English and math.

Placement and Proficiency Exams for First-Year Students

Oklahoma City University no longer requires entrance exams (ACT/SAT) for first-year students. For first-year students with no ACT or SAT scores, the Accuplacer and ALEKS instruments are administered to assess student proficiency and readiness for college-level work in reading, writing, and math. Based on ACT, SAT, Accuplacer and/or ALEKS scores, students may be required to take one or more of the following preparatory courses: EDUC 1013 College Academic Skills, ENGL 1071 Integrated Writing Lab and/or MATH 1303 Intermediate Algebra.

Students with an ACT reading sub-score of 19 or higher and/or an SAT Evidence-Based Reading/Writing of 510 or higher, or students entering OCU having completed a college-level English Composition course are not required to take the Accuplacer. If you have not reported any ACT or SAT scores to OCU by July 1, you will be instructed to take a proctored Accuplacer Reading Test prior to August 1 to determine baseline reading proficiency. If the Accuplacer is not completed by August 1, or a student scores 239 or less on the Accuplacer, they will be required to concurrently enroll in ENLG 1071 Integrated Writing Lab and ENGL 1113 Composition I in their first semester. Students transferring with more than 29 hours are not subject to the above requirements. Click here to find out more about the Accuplacer Reading Test or contact the Office of Academic Affairs ([email protected]).

While there is no fee for Accuplacer if you plan to attend OCU, there is a remote proctoring fee of $10 paid to the third-party virtual proctor, Examity, that must be paid at the time you take Accuplacer.

To register for the Accuplacer Reading Test, complete the short form below.

Students with an ACT Math sub-score of 19 or higher and/or an SAT Math of 510 or higher are not required to take any math placement tests. If ACT or SAT scores are lower than indicated above, or no scores are reported to OCU by July 1, students will be instructed to take a proctored ALEKS Placement Assessment to determine math placement and baseline proficiency. If the ALEKS Placement Assessment is not completed by August 1 prior to their first semester at OCU, students will be required to enroll in MATH 1303 Intermediate Algebra prior to taking additional Math courses. Students that are entering OCU having already completed College Algebra or a higher math course, are not subject to this requirement. Click here to find out more about the ALEKS PPL Assessment or contact the Office of Academic Affairs ([email protected]).

There is a fee of $20 to take the ALEKS PPL Assessment. You will pay for ALEKS with a credit card before you begin. The $20 fee includes up to 5 attempts as well as 12 months' access to the Prep and Learning Modules.

AP Tests

AP (Advanced Placement) courses and tests are given by high schools to allow students the opportunity to earn college credit in selected subject areas.

Click here to view which tests are accepted and the scores required to receive credit. (This information can also be found in the OCU undergraduate catalog.)

Foreign Language Tests

Unlike the AP or CLEP tests, our Foreign Language Tests do not award college credit but can exempt you from lower level courses. Students often save money and time by placing into more advanced levels in order to fulfill their Foreign Language requirement.

The tests can be taken remotely so long as the student has a B#, an OCU email address, and a computer with audio recording capabilities (such as what they would use for Zoom).

Testing is available in Spanish, French, German, Russian and Chinese. The test costs $20 and can be taken multiple times; we will use your highest score. Score results are viewable instantly, and automatically accessible to the school.

Register online for the foreign language test, and within 1-2 business days you will receive an invitation to the testing portal. You will have seven days before your access to the testing portal expires. Contact Dr. Karen Schiler, chair of English & Modern Languages, with questions or concerns.

CLEP Tests

CLEP (College Level Examination Program) tests are administered at OCU once a month. These tests allow students to receive college credit by taking subject examinations. The OCU undergraduate catalog lists the subject area examinations and their corresponding courses. These exams can be taken at any institution that offers CLEP testing. The College Composition exam needs to be taken by July 15th for fall matriculation. Please plan accordingly.

To register for an exam, go to and click on the My Account portal. You will register and pay online. The cost per test is $89. Additional costs may apply, depending upon the subject.
