OCU Students Earn Prestigious Scholarships

Two Oklahoma City University students were awarded Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships to study abroad in Kyoto, Japan, for the spring semester.

Mark Zachery and Bryne Harris were each awarded $5,000 scholarships for the spring 2013 semester.

Zachery and Harris will attend Ritsumeikan University through OCU's reciprocal exchange program. Both are American Indian Scholars at OCU.

Zachery is a biomedical science major and Harris is an English major. They are enrolled in the Intensive Japanese Language track at Ritsumeikan University.

The Gilman Scholarship is funded through the Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is overseen by the Institute for International Education in Houston, Texas. Its goal is to promote study abroad to all students, and particularly for those who are interested in studying outside of Western Europe and those interested in studying critical languages as defined by the State Department.

Alumna Named Fulbright Finalist

Oklahoma City University alumna Melody Metivier has been selected as a finalist by the U.S. Fulbright Commission to serve as an English teaching assistant in Germany from September 2013 through June 2014. Metivier's application will go to the German Fulbright Commission for the final selection process.

As an undergraduate at OCU, Metivier spent a semester studying in Austria at Alpen-Adria Universitat, which is a reciprocal exchange partner of OCU. She graduated in December with majors in elementary education, German and humanities.

Metivier is the third OCU student in two years to be named a finalist by the U.S. Fulbright Commission. The other two, 2012 graduates Shamari Reid and DeEtta Cravens, both went on to be selected as English teaching assistants by their host countries. Reid will begin teaching in Uruguay in March, while Cravens has been serving in Thailand since September.

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.
