The next Powerful Prose book review session will cover a collection of stories about Oklahoma City’s underworld during its earliest days. The presentation of “And Satan Came Also” will be at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 16 in the Full Circle Bookstore in 50 Penn Place.
Oklahoma City University President Robert Henry will lead the presentation.
“And Satan Came Also” is an illustrated collection of essays written by Albert McRill for a community newspaper. The essays cover Oklahoma City’s history from the 1889 Land Run to the mid-1950s.
McRill’s stories highlight some of the city’s more unusual historic events, the clash of opinions on major topics, houses of ill repute, their proprietors and descriptions of what life was like in what is now downtown, particularly the areas dubbed “Hell’s Half Acre” and “Big Anne’s Empire” from Front Street (Santa Fe) to Walker and Second Street to Reno.
“And Satan Came Also” was initially released as a collection in 1955. The Full Circle Press publishing company obtained permission to reprint the book, which was revised and annotated by librarian Larry Johnson for its release last year.
Powerful Prose: Great Ideas and the Literature that Advances Them is a monthly series presented by Oklahoma City University and Full Circle Bookstore.
All presentations are free to the public. The bookstore is on the first level of 50 Penn Place at 1900 NW Expressway.
