March 31 - Picturing Poetry: 'Il Postino' Screening

Join us for the continuation of our 37th annual film series on Sun., March 31, 2:00 PM Picturing Poetry: Il Postino (The Postman) Michael Radford and Massimo Troisi, Italy (1994) 108 min.

Our annual poetry-related story to build the mood for our visiting poet each spring, Il Postino explores the classic associations between poetry and love. Mario is a shy and hopeless man living on a coastal island in a depressed post-World War II Italy. When the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda and his wife come to live on the island while during the poet’s political exile, Mario jumps at the chance to take a temporary job delivering mail to their remote house. The postman strikes up a friendship that transforms him and his confidence to pursue the woman of his dreams. At its heart the film argues for the power of metaphorical thinking to expand our understanding of the world. In Italian and Spanish with English subtitles.

“a good-hearted little film . . . a quiet meditation on fate, tact, and poetry” – Roger Ebert
