About the Chapel

Bishop W. Angie Smith Chapel

  • The Bishop W. Angie Smith Chapel was purposely located between the academic and residential areas of the campus and bordering 23rd Street.
  • It stands as a symbol of the enduring Methodist commitment to the joining of knowledge, vital piety, and service to the world. The Chapel was named for Bishop W. Angie Smith who served as the Methodist Bishop of Oklahoma and New Mexico from 1944-1968.
  • Famed MIT architect Pietro Belluschi, perhaps best known for the MetLife Building in New York City, brought his extensive experience in designing churches to this signature structure. Reid and Associates, architectural firm, detailed the plans and supervised the construction.
  • The spire rises 151 feet over the sanctuary whose ceiling soars to the equivalent height of an eight-story building.
  • The sanctuary seats up to 600 and boasts a magnificent 70 rank Holtkamp organ enhanced by excellent acoustics.
  • The building’s striking beauty and unique four-gabled design houses the weekly Chapel worship service.
  • Bishop Smith Chapel is also home to The Wesley Center and the Saint Paul School of Theology at Oklahoma City University.

A Place of Honor

  • Downstairs, the large multipurpose room known as Watson Lounge honors the gifts of Dr. and Mrs. O. Alton Watson and was dedicated in 1979. It is used for a number of university events from dinners to meetings to worship to seminars and lectures.
  • In the northeast corner of the upper level of Smith Chapel is Harris Chapel which honors Mr. and Mrs. V.V. Harris. It is used primarily by Saint Paul for their weekly chapel worship service and for classes.
  • Situated between the two eastern doors on the upper level is the recently dedicated Bishop Robert E. Hayes, Jr. Classroom. Bishop Hayes served as Bishop of Oklahoma from 2004-2016 and was instrumental in bringing Saint Paul to the OCU campus. The room was dedicated in his honor in 2016.
