Biography

Savannah Self is a doctoral candidate in piano performance and pedagogy at the University of Oklahoma. During her time at OU, Self served as a graduate assistant, teaching group piano students, secondary applied piano students, and accompanying undergraduate vocalists. She also co-taught undergraduate piano pedagogy courses, taught in the preparatory piano lab, and held leadership roles in the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Collegiate Chapter and the Graduate Music Student Association.

Self’s research explores how piano students develop independent musicianship through efficient music reading, improvisation, and expanded repertoire, highlighting diverse, underrepresented compositional voices. She has presented this work at collegiate, state, and national conferences, including the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy, a leading biennial conference in the field. Self’s current research focuses on the legacy of Dr. Jane Magrath, Professor Emerita at OU, documenting her contributions to piano pedagogy through her extensive publication output.

Originally from Englewood, Tennessee, Self earned a Bachelor of Music Education at Tennessee Wesleyan University in 2020 and a Master of Music in Piano Performance at the University of Tennessee – Knoxville, where she served as a graduate assistant in teaching and accompanying.

After receiving her master’s degree, Self taught general music to Pre-K-8 students in the public-school setting while maintaining a private piano studio. During this time, she collaborated with former professors to launch a community music school at her alma mater, Tennessee Wesleyan University, serving local pre-college students.
