Biography

Tony Gonzalez, Associate Director of Choral Activities, is in his eighth year at Oklahoma City University. He conducts the University Singers, the University Chorale, and heads the secondary vocal music education department. The University Singers have performed at OkMEA (2018, 2023) and SWACDA (2020). He spent 17 years at Norman North High School producing a program that gained state, regional, and national acclaim. His groups earned State Sweepstakes 17 consecutive years, won 17 festivals in 10 major cities, and performed at OMEA, OCDA, SWACDA, and ACDA conventions. His Chorale performed on NPR’s From the Top. He has served as an adjudicator and guest conductor throughout the Southwest. He was named as one of the Outstanding Music Educators in the country by NAfME in 2003. He is the 2005, 2006, and 2007 recipient of the state, regional and national Music Educator of the Year award for the National Federation of High Schools. In 2008, OkMEA honored him as Exemplary Teacher. He was the 2015 recipient of the OCDA Director of Distinction Award.

A native of Brownsville, Texas, Tony attended Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas; earned his Bachelor of Music Education at Texas A&M University in Kingsville; received a Master of Music Education from the University of Oklahoma; and is ABD toward his Doctor of Musical Arts degree. Tony taught high school in Texas, is former Director of Choral Activities at USAO (Chickasha), and was conductor of the Norman Community Choral Society and the Oklahoma Vocal Arts Ensemble. He has served as OCDA President, SWACDA President, OCDA R&S Jazz Chair, and SWACDA R&S High School Chair.
