Packed with whimsical Parisian charm and secret acts of kindness, a musical adaptation of “Amélie” will delight and inspire audiences at Oklahoma City University this weekend.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday in OCU’s Burg Theatre.
Based on the award-winning 2001 French film, “Amélie” follows a resourceful and imaginative young woman living in Paris whose unusual childhood has left her longing for connection while being terrified of vulnerability. Her life changes course when she embarks on a mission to secretly return a box of childhood treasures to a former tenant of her apartment. This single gesture sparks a series of secret acts of kindness across Paris, leading Amélie to risk everything in pursuit of true belonging and love.
Karen Coe Miller, assistant director of OCU’s Oklahoma Opera and Music Theater Company, is directing the acclaimed UK revised adaptation of the film.
“My connection with the story began when I saw the quirky and imaginative film in the early 2000s. It was funny, poignant and visually innovative,” Miller said. “When I read the revised adaptation of the script, it struck me as perfect for our Spotlight productions, where we ask audiences to engage their own imagination to enter the world of the show.”
Following its 2015 premiere at Berkeley Repertory Theatre and a 2017 Broadway run, the musical underwent a fresh, critically acclaimed UK revision between 2019 and 2021.
Tickets are available at the OCUPerforms website at okcu.edu/ocuperforms or by calling 405-208-5227. The Burg Theatre is in the Kirkpatrick Fine Arts Center at 2501 N. Blackwelder.
