A scholarship at Oklahoma City University aimed at helping local teens afford college has now been extended to students at Bethany High School.
The university’s OKCPS Scholarship was introduced last year with the goal of providing significant discounts on tuition to students from Oklahoma City Public Schools sites.
The scholarship is based on a high school student’s incoming GPA and provides up to $5,000 per year in assistance that can be stacked on top of OCU’s regular academic merit scholarships, which already reach as high as $13,000 per year.
Offering the scholarship to students from Bethany High School makes sense given OCU’s philosophy of being a good community partner, university President Kenneth Evans said.
“We’re known as Oklahoma City’s university, but that doesn’t mean we’re not looking out for residents all across the metro,” Evans said. “We’re excited to partner with Bethany High School to help support college affordability throughout the local area.”
The scholarship is available for up to five students annually from Bethany High School beginning in the fall 2027 semester. It applies to those majoring in Arts & Sciences, Business or Nursing. Students who receive the scholarship are also eligible for an additional academic success award that would kick in during their sophomore year.
When combined with OCU’s regular academic merit scholarships, the awards may see some students have more than 75% of their annual tuition covered for their sophomore, junior and senior years of college.
“We are grateful to partner with Oklahoma City University to provide this wonderful benefit to our students,” Bethany Public Schools Superintendent Reuben Bellows said. “College affordability is an important issue for many of our stakeholders, and having local partners step up to address the issue is a welcome development.”
Evans said the university will continue to seek out and develop partnerships with other metro-area schools, just as leaders have done with the Oklahoma City and Bethany school districts.
