OCU Spring Show Celebrates American Dance

Oklahoma City University’s internationally renowned American Spirit Dance Company will showcase Broadway-style American musical theater dance with its annual Spring Show from March 10 to 12.

Directed by OCU Dance Chair Jo Rowan, audiences can sample the best of Broadway through fast-paced tap, jazz, and theatrical dances, all without traveling to New York, on the stage of OCU’s Kirkpatrick Fine Arts Center.

This year’s show opens with an energetic women’s tap number, “Hot Shoe Shuffle,” and segues into the comedic-hip hop “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” which is packed full of pop, punch and swag. Also included in the first act is “Boogie Bumper,” which emphasizes the roaring 1920s and the very colorful “American Tarantella,” celebrating New York City’s Feast of San Gennaro.

Act 2 features several lyrical dances that showcase the complexity of human relationships along with warm, uplifting numbers like “That’s How We Do,” which takes the audience on a beach adventure. The show closes out with a tribute to the Elvis years, “Come on Everybody.”

The 140-member American Spirit Dance Company has been a seed bed for professional performers on Broadway and all over the world. More than 70 Broadway shows have employed Oklahoma City University graduates and nearly 50 alumni have become Radio City Rockettes.

Show times are 7 p.m. March 10, 8 p.m. March 11 and 2 and 8 p.m. March 12. Tickets are $23 and all seats are reserved. To purchase tickets, call (405)-208-5227 from noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
