A philosophy professor at Oklahoma City University will give a free public presentation at 7 p.m. Jan. 31 about how modern science has shaped society’s impressions of God. “Quantum Physics and the Future of God: How Science is Redefining Transcendence” will be held in room 100 lecture hall of the Sarkeys Center for Science and Math near N.W. 23rd Street and Kentucky Avenue.

Rev. Robin Meyers, the Distinguished Professor of Social Justice at Oklahoma City University and senior minister of Mayflower Congregational UCC Church, will discuss how science is helping to usher in a new age of mysticism.

“Moving away from a Newtonian ‘clockwork’ universe, where the whole is merely the sum of the parts, quantum physics and complexity theory is challenging long-held views on the nature of reality itself,” Meyers said. “What Einstein called ‘spooky action at a distance’ may hold intriguing new models for understanding the ultimate mystery we call God.”

Meyers has written seven books including “Spiritual Defiance: Building a Beloved Community of Resistance” in 2015, which was the topic of last year’s public lecture. Many of his studies focus on the merits of Progressive Christianity.

He is a frequent speaker at church workshops, academic conferences and political events around the U.S., and has been a commentator about social events for national media outlets including NPR, Dateline NBC, ABC World News Tonight and others.

In 2001, he became a spiritual advisor to the first woman executed in the state of Oklahoma and was featured in the HBO documentary “The Execution of Wanda Jean.” Meyers was the Earl Preacher at the Earl Lectures at Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California; was named the Angie Debo Civil Libertarian of the year by the ACLU of Oklahoma; has twice been a guest preacher at the Riverside Church of New York City; and gave the prestigious Lyman Beecher Lectures at Yale. He holds a master of divinity degree from Phillips University and a doctorate from the University of Oklahoma. The lecture at Oklahoma City University is expected to last 45 minutes with time for questions and discussion after the presentation.
