ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

Why minor in environmental science?

A minor in environmental science provides students with a framework for understanding the role of environmental forces that shape human populations and society, and provides a foundation for understanding the interdisciplinary nature of environmental problems and opportunities. Environmental science has become an essential component of a wide variety of fields and in a variety of careers, and its importance will only increase in the future.

How do I declare a minor in environmental science?

Students interested in any major or minor in the biological sciences are encouraged to meet with an advisor to discuss their academic plans as soon as possible! You have to declare your minor in order for it to show up on your transcript. Merely taking the required classes is not enough. You need to fill out the “Change in Academic Status” form, signed by the chair of the Biology Department.

Students are required to complete 24 credit hours, which includes:

  • Fundamentals of Biology (BIOL 1214)
  • General Botany (BIOL 2214)
  • General Zoology (BIOL 2414)
  • either Environmental Science (BIOL 1314) or Principles of Ecology (BIOL 3314)
  • Environmental Chemistry (CHEM 2104)
  • Environmental Ethics (PHIL 2163)
  • Blue Thumb (BIOL 2851)

Note: PHIL 2163 satisfies the Philosophy/Ethics general education requirement and BIOL 2851 satisfies the Service Learning general education requirement.
