A New Cheer Learned and Chance to Shine for Children’s Cheer Clinic
Children tend to be cheery by nature, but it certainly wouldn’t hurt to fine-tune those cheerleading skills with some help from a professional instructor who likes to make the sport fun. Brandy Corcoran, head coach for the Oklahoma City University Stars cheerleading team, is putting together a cheer clinic for an opportune time – Jan. 3, when the children are still restless from the holidays but not yet back in school. “This is perfect for all working parents who would like to have a little time off before the kids start back to school,” Corcoran said. “It gets them active again, they burn off some energy, learn some new skills and have fun while doing it.” There’s no sense waiting around to show off those jumps, hurkies and chants - participants will get to show off their tricks that same day during halftime of the OCU Stars basketball game. The cheer clinic is a first for a team that itself is a new program for the university. The Stars are in their first year of competitive cheerleading. But that’s not to say they’re inexperienced. Corcoran came to OCU with years of success at the University of Central Oklahoma and the University of Oklahoma. She led UCO to back-to-back national titles, and then took OU to a top-five finish in the national finals for Division 1A schools. Corcoran is also the dance coordinator for the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz arena football team. The OCU team is also loaded with talent, as shown in its superior ratings from its first competition in St. Louis, Mo., late last summer. Team members will be helping Corcoran teach the clinic so the children can get more individualized instruction. Cost to attend the clinic is $30, and pre-registration is required. Deadline to register is 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19. Participants will receive a T-shirt and two tickets to the game in which they’ll perform. The OCU Stars women’s basketball team plays Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 6 p.m. Jan. 3 in Abe Lemons Arena.
