The premiere of a chamber opera by graduate composer Katarzyna Brochocka will highlight the March 12 concert of Project 21: Music for the 21st Century. The 8 p.m. event in the Bass Music Center at Oklahoma City University is free and open to the public.
Brochocka’s work. “Happy Garden of Life,” is based on the the short story by Kurt Vonnegut. The work will feature vocalists Davy Green, Bridget Skaggs, Jeffrey Gates, Dustin Hertzog, Justin Brown and Robert Watson.
Instrumentalists performing at the premiere are Kat Herbison, flute; Judyta Murzyn, alto saxophone; Evan Chancellor, horn; Travis Smith, bassoon; Angelica Pereira Espitia, violin; Ruben Gil, viola; Alejandro Acosta Acero, cello; Gregory Anikienro, percussion; Marcin Parys, harpsichord; and Hsin I-Lin, piano.
Professor Jan McDaniel is the work’s music director and Benjamin Nilles is rehearsal conductor.
The program also features two music videos – “Watercolor” and “Black to Red” -- by composition graduate student Mara Karpova; “Metropolis Dreams,” an electro-acoustic work by composition senior Jonathan Edwards; and “Prismas” by freshman composition major Luis Felipe Nieto, with the composer on guitar and Alejandro Acosta Acero on cello.
