The jazz ensembles of Oklahoma City University will perform Monday, April 27, in the Large Rehearsal Hall of the Bass Music Center. The 8 p.m. concert is free and open to the public.
Dr. Cory Gavito, piano, and Prof. John Allen, trombone, will be faculty guest artists. The ensembles are under the direction of Dr. Kris Maloy, head of jazz and improvisation studies.
OCU’s Jazz Combo will present “How High the Moon” (Lewis/Hamilton), “When You Wish Upon a Star” (Harline/Washington), “Cerulean” (Kris Maloy), “Stardust” (Carmichael/Parish), and “Hopscotch” (Ralph Moore).
Manna Nichols will be featured vocalist. Robert Redmond is on trumpet; Joe Doubleday, vibes, piano; Brian Anderson, guitar; Brian McQuade, bass; Jerred Murphy and Jeremy Parr, drums; and Dr. Cory Gavito, piano.
The Jazz Orchestra will follow with “Malaguena” (Lecuona/arr. Holman), “The Queen Bee” (Nestico), “Chega de Saudade“ (No More Blues)” (Jobim/arr. Taylor) and “The Very Thought of You” (Ray Noble/arr. Nelson Riddle), both featuring Rachael Drozda; “April in Paris” (Duke/Harburg/arr. Nestico); and “Blue Rondo a la Turk” (Brubeck/arr. Custer).
The Jazz Orchestra is comprised of Ryan Beach, Tomasz Dabrowski, Dwight Goetz, and Nathan Reed on trumpet; John Allen, Chris Lecher, Josh Attaway, and Justin Sechrist on trombone; Brady Rohling, Lisa Hollowell and Erin O'Connor on saxophone; and a rhythm section of Julie Huang and Kaelyn Neal, piano; Brian Anderson, guitar; Joe Doubleday, vibes; Sam Hinson, bass; and Jerred Murphy and Eddy Streck, drums.
