The new Oklahoma City University sailing club won the best boat/crew competition at the 18th annual Layton Regatta at Lake Thunderbird near Norman on Sunday, Oct. 4.
The OCU boat, a 22-foot sloop called Star Chaser, won the first and second race in the wind-driven rain and choppy-water conditions. In the last race the OCU club used sailing tactics to force a competitor’s boat, Barchetta, to cross the start line early, which gave Star Chaser another victory.
Glede Holman, OCU Sailing’s sponsor and coach, said his crew performed above expectations considering the fact that the team is less than a year old.
“This was Star Chaser’s debut as an OCU boat and I would have been happy if she just finished the races, but our sailors proved their skill and showed us what she could do,” Holman said. “In my book, that is a significant accomplishment for an organization that didn’t even exist before last February. While the win is sweet, the biggest accomplishment came in the form of unsolicited comments from the other competitors, inviting OCU Sailing back and saying that they would be honored to sail with us.”
