He also performed, lectured, gave master classes and conducted the Festival Ensemble at the 2008 International Double Bass Competition and World Double Bass Festival held August 9-14 in Wroclaw, Poland. Schimek was the 2007 Teacher of the Year awarded by the Oklahoma chapter of the American String Teachers Association. He has presented clinics and performances in 31 states and three continents and has served on education boards at the state and national levels. He has written for state music education magazines, is published in journals such as “Bass World,” “American String Teachers Association, and “Teaching Music”, and is a contributing author in "Teaching Music Through Orchestra Performance", vol.3. An advocate of presenting music to children, he has composed several programs featuring the double bass in chamber music. He is a member of the board of directors of the International Society of Bassists. Through his efforts, Oklahoma City University hosted more than 1,000 bass players, teachers and composers from around the world for the 2007 ISB convention.
