Young Musicians Flock to OCU for All-State, Music Olympics
The Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University is hosting two Valentineís weekend events celebrating excellence among young musicians. The 2010 Oklahoma Small Schools Band Directors Associationís All State Band, for music students in 2A, 3A and 4A schools, will be held at the Bass School Feb. 11-13. The three-day clinic will be followed by a 3 p.m. concert Saturday, Feb. 13. The event is free and open to the public. On Sunday, Feb. 14, the Bass School hosts the 2010 Oklahoma Music Olympics, beginning at 12:30 p.m. The annual competition, held under the auspices of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and the Orchestra League, offers more than $10,000 in prize money. High school musicians will compete for honors in the Buttram Competition for strings and string quartet; the Carver Competition for brass, harp, woodwind and percussion; and the Meinders Competition for piano. The Gilliam Competition, in its inaugural year, offers prizes for pianists through eighth grade. The Keith Competition, now in its 30th year, honors violin, viola, cello, and double bass beginners through eighth grade. Winners will perform 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, in OCUís Petree Recital Hall, 2501 N. Blackwelder. Selected winners are invited to perform as soloists in the Oklahoma City Philharmonic's annual Side-By-Side concert.
