TUESDAY, APRIL 20
The romantic musical comedy “Thoroughly Modern Millie” closes the 2009-10 season for the Oklahoma Opera and Music Theater Company at Oklahoma City University, April 23-25.
Winner of the 2002 Tony Award for Best Musical, "Thoroughly Modern Millie" is set in the Roaring Twenties, chronicling the adventures of starry-eyed Millie Dillmount, who leaves Kansas for New York City to attempt the thoroughly modern feat of marrying a millionaire.
Performances are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday with a 3 p.m. Sunday matinee. The 40-piece orchestra is under the direction of Matthew Mailman. Guest director Bob Durkin will give a free pre-show talk 45 minutes before curtain.
Tickets ($12-25) are available from 405.208.5227 or online at www.okcu.edu/ticketoffice
Arts critic Ben Brantley of The New York Times notes “the presentation is breathless and the music a giddy mishmash of references to and appropriations from Al Jolson to Gilbert and Sullivan, Victor Herbert and Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker.”
