OCU Featured in College Access & Opportunity Guide
A college guidebook that targets low-income, first-generation college-bound students has listed Oklahoma City University as one of the most accessible colleges in the country. Released this month by Sourcebooks, under direction of the nonprofit Center for Student Opportunity, the 2011 College Access & Opportunity Guide is intended to give students and their supporters the necessary information to pursue and succeed in college. Michelle Lockhart, OCU senior director of admissions, cited the university’s efforts in helping students find their funding as the primary reason for being included in the guidebook. “Oklahoma City University goes the extra mile to help prospective students find the funding they need to attend college,” Lockhart said. “At many other universities, students are left to do the legwork. Getting into any college can be a confusing and intimidating process. We help our students throughout the enrollment process, including the financial aspect, to make it easier.” “We want to show students and their supporters that the opportunity for college is there,” said Matt Rubinoff, executive director of the Center for Student Opportunity. “The 2011 College Access & Opportunity Guide is a special resource that provides guidance through the college process and delivers important information on college programs aimed to serve low-income, first-generation college students.” Despite their college aspirations, the center has found that its target audience is underrepresented on college campuses. Statistics show that high-achieving students from low-income families have about the same chance of enrolling in college as low-achieving students from wealthier families. Furthermore, the Center for Student Opportunity has found retention rates to be a problem, citing a recent USA Today article noting that 89 percent of low-income, first-generation students leave college within six years without a degree. The College Access & Opportunity Guide features 284 colleges and universities highlighted for their outreach efforts, financial aid opportunities and student support services. It includes a four-step plan to college along with articles and advice from college students and experts. For more information about the guide visit
