Oklahoma City University will host a workshop Feb. 12 to give current and future students a jump start into the entertainment industry. The event is open to the public.
The workshop, titled “The Entertainment Industry: Making the Magic Happen,” is being organized by OCU’s Ann Lacy School of American Dance and Arts Management to show participants what they can expect when getting into the field.
“The most exciting and fulfilling careers are in the entertainment industry,” said Rachel Jacquemain, director of the Entertainment Business program at OCU. “This workshop is packed with useful information about working in various aspects of the industry.”
The day-long workshop will feature six professionals discussing a variety of topics about the entertainment industry. Barkley Russell, a professional parade production specialist who organized the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1996 Summer Olympics, will discuss the importance of public relations and how to work with multiple partners on large events; Larry Payton, founder and president of the major production firm Celebrity Attractions, will give a presentation about marketing for events and how his Broadway touring production has evolved; Richard Huff, a consultant who has worked with state and city governments across the U.S. to establish cultural enrichment organizations, will discuss the importance of public art policies; Jeromy Smith, professional actor and choreographer who starred in several touring productions including “Swing!” and “42nd Street,” will talk about theatrical management; George Ryan, owner of a stage audio company, will discuss his experiences working on national events as a broadcast audio sound designer; and Kevin Reese, a producer who specializes in musicals for children, will discuss the future of stage production.
“We are proud to have assembled such a notable list of leading professionals who can speak from experience, and who wish to help advance the careers of the next generation of entertainment industry professionals,” Jacquemain said.
The workshop will run from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Moot Courtroom in the OCU School of Law at N.W. 23rd Street and Kentucky Avenue.
The $20 entrance fee includes breakfast, lunch and a commemorative T-shirt.
Tickets are available through the OCU Performing Arts Ticket Office in the Edith Kinney Gaylord Center at N.W. 23rd Street and Blackwelder Avenue. Office hours are noon to 4 p.m. weekdays.
